Railroad Man
Written for Contraption in the fall of 2021, Railroad Man conjures the machinery, myth, and human labor of the American railroad’s golden age through a hybrid sonic world. Drawing on archival recordings from the 1920s, the piece constructs a fractured, almost cinematic soundscape that is at once historical document and imagined environment, evoking a distinctly steampunk sonic aesthetic.
At its core is a slow, almost imperceptible transformation. What begins as a distant Fox-Trot gradually corrodes from within: textures thicken, distortion accumulates, and the music is pulled, sometimes violently, into the orbit of heavy metal. This process is less a clean stylistic shift than a kind of industrial overgrowth, where past and present collapse into one another.
Railroad Man also foregrounds the physical and communal labor behind this mythology. The piece pays homage to early 20th-century railroad workers, particularly the Gandy Dancers, through the incorporation of coordinated lighting, embodied gesture, and the fragmented emergence of the folk tune “Way Out in Idaho.” Sung, whispered, and ultimately dissolved into noise, the tune functions as both artifact and ghost, an echo of human presence within an increasingly mechanized sonic environment.
